It’s debatable whose method of dealing with deviants was more humane: the European system of locking them away in prisons or the African system of simply kicking them the fuck out the village.
On the one hand, you had the freak safely locked away in the company solely of other freaks.
On the other, you had total isolation, the non-industrious freak almost condemned to death because of the lack of a support system and the chance that if he did encounter others, they’d be of a hostile nation and foreign tongue.
Europeans did seem to come around to the African way of thinking when, after Columbus’ famed mistake resulted in Europe discovering a whole other continent, the English were the ones who decided to turn their prison overpopulation problem to their advantage by dumping cons, whores and the criminally insane into this new land then charging them taxes to work it.
There were only two problems: there was already an indigenous population at the new locale and nobody wanted to do the work themselves.
So war was made on the Indians, and the Africans were imported.
In 1790, the now “United States” decided to invent something called “race” and subsequently govern somewhat along those lines.
Then another problem arose.
See, with the Indians nearly eradicated, Negritude became the designated bottom of the barrel, became, in fact, so polluted that it absolutely ruined everything else, to the extent that it took a full four generations to shake free of it’s taint.
But while the one-drop rule may have seemed a like a good idea at the time, it gave the Negroes way more people than they would have been entitled to through more thoughtful planning.
And on top of that, the Negroes were breeding like roaches!
So now simply, in order to maintain a “majority”, not only did the “white” people have to keep making babies and pretty much throw open the gates of immigration to a greater part of Europe, but pale-skinned people like the Irish and Italians who had not been originally considered “white”, became “white” in the process.
And now with white birth rates being at an all-time low, nearly everybody that isn’t clearly Negro is, on some level at least, considered “white”.
So, here’s the question: if those invented races weren’t designed to be at war, would there have been the need make distinctions between one citizen and another or invent “race” in the first place?
And if, as The Usual Suspects teaches us, “the greatest trick that the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist“, then the greatest trick that America ever pulled was convincing it’s Black citizens that despite the fact that there are ceasefires and prolonged periods of peace that allow business to go on as usual during any conflict, there was, in fact, no war.
And we seem to believe it too, despite the fact that continued attempts to thin our herd are made through mass incarcerations of our males during their prime child-producing years, a programmed indifference to Black murder and seemingly random police shootings which we protest, but never enough, you’d imagine, to get the cops in question convicted.
So, Dylann Roof, the young madman that claims he was trying to start a race war when he walked into a South Carolina church and killed nine Black parishioners, wasn’t behaving so much like Charles Manson, of Helter Skelter fame but like William Calley of My Lai Massacre.
He’s a war criminal.
And here’s hoping that unlike former President Nixon did for Calley, Trump won’t pardon Dylann Roof.
